The design stage is the best time to build water efficiency into your home. This is the easiest point to factor in low costs items such as water-efficient taps, low flow shower heads and dual-flush toilets. Think water-wise at the design stage and you will save water and money for years to come.
- Choose water efficient products
- Choose water efficient products, such as shower heads, toilets and taps for your new home. See more information about the water efficiency labelling scheme (WELS).
- Consider your hot water needs
- Talk to your plumber about installing the correct sized hot water cylinder or system, to ensure you do not waste hot water. You can also save money by ensuring your cylinder is well insulated to prevent heat loss.
- Consider choosing a low- pressure water supply
- Your plumber can provide you with advice on adding a pressure limiting valve which reduces the pressure of water from the mains. A low-pressure water supply will limit the amount of water coming out of your tap or shower. This still gives a comfortable shower while saving you water and money.
- Build in supplementary rainwater supply
- Installing a rainwater tank can significantly reduce your water usage. It can provide non-drinking water for uses such as flushing the toilet and watering the garden.
- Plan for your garden water needs
- Design a garden that needs only minimal watering in summer. If in a dry area, build a dripper irrigation system into the garden design.
- Consider installing a rain garden
- If you live in an area of high rain fall, consider a rain garden.
