Flatmates Stewart, Hazel and Margaret were surprised at how easy - and smell-free - it was to compost all of their kitchen and garden waste using a Bokashi bucket.
“We wanted to make use of resources,” says Hazel. Stewart agrees “We didn’t want to just biff it out!”
They keep their Bokashi bucket in the kitchen, which they empty into a home made composting bin, made from pea straw, in the back garden.
At first they thought the composting would be smelly. “I wasn’t even sure that it would work!” says Stewart. But they found that the Bokashi speeds up the composting process and that the bucket doesn’t smell.
They also found that the Bokashi bin saved them having to go to the compost bin as often. “It’s sort of like our transfer station,” said Stewart.
Home composting and recycling saves them money on rubbish bags - they are now only putting out a bag once every three weeks.
