NOW Homes® are being developed throughout New Zealand in an extended research project on creating affordable homes that are warmer, healthier, cheaper to run and kinder to the environment.
Designed to meet future needs, NOW Home® projects use materials and technology readily available now. Once built or retrofitted, the effectiveness of the changes is monitored while the house is occupied.
Monitoring figures for the first year of the Waitakere NOW Home® showed it used 40% less water than the average home in surrounding Waitakere City and more than 66% less than the Auckland regional average. The main reason for this is the rainwater tank, but the low flow dual-flush toilet is also significant.
