Here are just some suggestions to help your business get involved in and celebrate World Environment Day.
External:
- Host a business networking function or seminar to discuss environmental business initiatives.
- Look at opportunities to do something for your clients/customers – e.g. promotional discount on sustainable products and/or services on World Environment Day.
- Demonstrate your business’s support for World Environment Day and sustainable practices by holding an event or activity and promote this through advertising.
- Be creative – investigate marketing opportunities for your business with an environmental focus.
- Sponsor an environmental cause.
- Pledge commitment to implementing sustainable practices in your business from World Environment Day onwards.
Internal:
- Promote ideas to reduce, re-use and recycle waste e.g. set up an organic waste system for the office, set your printers and copiers to double side automatically.
- Encourage staff to use sustainable modes of transportation (walking, jogging, cycling, skating, public transport, carpool) for a day.
- Raise environmental awareness amongst staff by scheduling training programmes or invite a guest speaker to the workplace (e.g. local council eco-adviser).
- Have a ‘no lift’ day at work and use the stairs instead.
- Set up a ‘green group’ in your office to help identify and drive the uptake of sustainable practices throughout the year.
- Calculate your organisation’s carbon footprint and look to reduce or offset your company’s greenhouse gas emissions – see www.carbonzero.co.nz.
Think of other activities that have high participation, raise public awareness and have a legacy or sustainable outcome that will mean the most to your business.
