Reasons for households to save water

Household water use accounts for around 60% of reticulated (piped) water demand.  There is a cost to supplying and treating this water and we need to use it carefully.

What's the story with water throughout the rest of the world?

Over the last 3,200 years, the number of people on Earth has increased seven times but the amount of water we use has increased 35 times.  It is estimated that one third of the world’s population is affected by water shortages.

Water supply

Depending on where you live your water will either be supplied by your council or you will be on your own water supply system.

Supplying and treating water is energy intensive

By being water smart you can help make a difference to the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

Supplying water to our homes is costly

Though we might think our water is free and plentiful, there is a cost involved in supplying it to our homes and in treating the wastewater which leaves them.

Is water really an issue? It's always raining here!

Wherever we live in New Zealand we need to be careful with our water use.

Wastewater treatment

Depending on where you live your wastewater will either leave your home through a sewer pipe or be treated on-site.
