Even when turned off, appliances can still use power. New Zealanders waste more electricity keeping some products on standby than we do actually using them. An estimated $100 million is spent every year keeping products on standby. For example:
Standby power consumes around 10% of an average household’s electricity
- It can take more electricity per year keeping your DVD player on in standby mode than it actually uses playing DVDs.
- Computer screen savers don’t save energy and sometimes even increase energy use. If you are going away for more than an hour, turn your computer off, or switch them into sleep mode.
