Earth Hour

Location: Nationwide

Turn off your lights and non-essential appliances for one hour on 29 March to take part in the global Earth Hour.

The project, pioneered in Sydney last year, is designed to make a statement about the need to tackle climate change at the local level. Last year, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on 31 March 2007 electricity consumption fell by 10.2% which was about twice what the organisers had hoped for. This was equivalent to 400,000 televisions being turned off for an hour and a saving of 52 tonnes of CO2. These figures prompted Earth Hour to be adopted by at least 15 other cities around the world.

Christchurch is leading the way for earth hour in New Zealand. In Christchurch the Earth Hour action is being co-ordinated by The Press, together with the Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury. For more information read the Press article.
