If you’ve ever found yourself standing in the supermarket overwhelmed by the competing environmental claims of different products, then help is at hand. This week sees the launch of an online eco-label directory which will allow consumers to get the full picture.

The eco-label directory is intended to help the public better understand what eco-labels are, what they mean, and what the differences are between them. It brings together all the different labels used in New Zealand for the first time, as well as those used on imports and exports. It is searchable in a number of ways and is easy to access.
The directory gives information on each label, such as its owner, it applicability, whether it meets specified standards, if it is independently audited and how often it is reviewed. This will allow consumers to make more informed and smarter decisions about which products they use or buy.
The directory is available through the Ministry of Economic Development’s website.
