Over 500 people bussed and car pooled their way around Wellington for the Open Eco Homes Tour, as part of Wellington City Council’s Sustainable Saturday programme for World Environment Day.
The tour included visiting a wide variety of eco sites from worm farming to sustainable homes. One of the stops was Raewyn Baldwin’s Hataitai permaculture garden that feeds a family of five, which she graciously opened to the public. Over 300 visitors were also treated to the design insight behind an innovative solar home by architect Richard Wright.
Local and central government also got in on the act, with Wellington City Councillor Celia Wade-Brown throwing open the doors to her retrofitted home overlooking Cook Straight and the Department Of Conservation running a tour of their 5 Star Green Office Building.
Distinctly more ‘earthy’ was the Tip Tiki tour, which offered a free bus to 50 curious souls who learnt about worm farming, composting and turning junk to treasure at the landfill’s recycling quadrant.
