Taranaki’s Inglewood High School is leading the way by initiating energy conservation and renewable energy generation schemes which aim to reduce the school’s electricity demand from the national grid by 15% in 12 months.
Last Monday senior students erected their new wind turbine, which joins several photovoltaic panels that were installed last month. While this technology will convert natural resources to energy, saving the school money on their power bill, the main aim of this project is to teach the students and community about importance of energy conservation.
Teacher Warwick Foy said that the turbine is an excellent visual symbol for the project.
Believed to be the first of its type ever attempted in New Zealand, the Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Generation Pilot Project is funded by Venture Taranaki and the Ministry for the Environment's Sustainable Management Fund, with assistance from Enviroschools, Powerco and EcoInnovation.
