Sustainable living boost for the Far North

1 September 2008

A new programme spearheaded by the Far North Environment Centre will give local households a boost to reduce their ecological footprint. The Kaitaia-based centre has secured government funding through the Ministry for the Environment’s sustainable management fund for the Sustainable Living Activation Programme.

The programme is a free service designed to help individuals and households in the Far North assess and then reduce their consumption. Not only is this good for the environment, the programme will also find ways that households can save money.

Assessments for the programme will include a visit to each home by an ‘activator’ who will look at the household’s energy, waste, water and transport use, as well as the building itself. The ‘activator’ will then provide some recommendations on how the household can increase their sustainability while saving money.

For more information, call the environment centre on (09) 408 1086 or check out their website. If you’d like to take part in the programme, email info@ecocentre.co.nz with your name, address and a contact number.
