Commuters were invited to walk the red carpet at the Britomart Transport Centre in Auckland on World Environment Day.
Giving commuters the red carpet treatment was a way of saying thank you to those who regularly use public transport and therefore help to reduce carbon emissions. Similar stands operated at the Henderson transport interchange, Albany bus station, Papakura train station, Manurewa interchange and the Downtown Ferry Building.
Local councils, with funding support from the Ministry for the Environment, gave away cloth bags and electricity-saving electric light bulbs to reward commuters and promote sustainable activities.
Commuters were surprised and enthusiastically took advantage of the free offerings. The Auckland Regional Transport Authority also offered the opportunity to go into the draw for a year's free public transport.
