Canterburians turned up in their hundreds to visit the ‘Step Up Canterbury’ expo and auction. Attendees collected passport stamps from the various expo stalls when they answered environment related questions. The passport stamps turned into 'Step Up Points' that could be used to bid for over $40,000 worth of environmentally friendly prizes donated by local businesses.
The Prime Minister, Helen Clark, auctioned off a set of four bikes donated by Pennys Cycles. The bikes went to a local father or three who had come along just for a look and ended up having strangers giving him their 'Step Up Points' to keep him in the bidding.
The hottest item of the day was the HRV system, worth $4,500 donated by Canterbury HRV. Two couples bided strongly for over 30 mins with the final bid getting to over 80,000 'Step Up Points'. The day was concluded with the judging of the art to waste competition.
