A ‘learning festival’ called Good Habits at Te Maara brought together local schools, refugee, new migrant and Pacific Island communities from the Porirua region to celebrate World Environment Day. The event was designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to help them ‘kick the carbon habit.’
The first event saw senior students from Cannons Creek School and Brandon Intermediate adopting a ‘tuakana-teina (mentoring) model’ to present six workshops to their peers on how to live a low-carbon lifestyle.
The second event, attended by MP Winnie Laban, took place the next day where five local migrant or refugee facilitators spread the word about culturally-specific composting courses to people from their own language groups.
