A Sweet Surprise for Golden Bay Residents During World Environment Day

8 June 2008

Golden Bay residents felt the sweet benefits of sharing rides thanks to the volunteers of the Golden Bay Environment Centre, Nelson. To promote transport alternatives, throughout the week of World Environment Day, volunteers sat on "Ride Share Benches" and waited for someone to stop and offer them a ride. Those stopping were given a locally made chocolate as a thank you for offering a ride. They were told about the new benches in the area and the new signs to make the benches much more visible. With an average wait time of 20 minutes for a ride, and over 100 chocolates given out in appreciation, the event was a great success.

The overall objective was to provide transportation alternatives in an area which is geographically wide spread, and lacks a public transport system.
