Look into alternative vehicles

Alternative vehicles like hybrids, electrics and diesels are becoming more common. They typically emit fewer greenhouse gases than petrol driven cars, and fewer pollutants.

Hybrids

Hybrid vehicles have an internal combustion engine using petrol or diesel, and an electric engine. They use one or the other or both when extra power is needed. They typically use much less fuel than a conventional engine.

Check out the AA's Hybrid vehicle webpage for more information.

Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles (either “plug-in” or battery powered) emit less carbon dioxide than other vehicles and are starting to come on to the market overseas.

Although some models of electric cars are already available, many do not meet New Zealand minimum safety requirements. Mass produced and fully safety compliant electric cars are expected to be introduced into New Zealand during the next decade.
